Sermon Series: Love Our City
I love Houston. I love the people here. I love the Houston spirit that appreciates the past but leans into the future with a “can do” attitude. I love the diversity of people and culture. I love the generosity of heart and hand that I see in so many people. I love the weather in October, November, and April. But what does it mean to REALLY love our city, to love it in tangible ways? Imagine a movement of people who, in the name and character of Jesus, are propelled into Houston every single day to show God’s love in tangible ways. These people work for causes and organizations that bring wholeness and healing to the city. They reach out with deeds of lovingkindness every day to the neighbor down the street or around the corner. They are agents of hope in their own families and workplaces, witnesses to the kind of transformation Jesus can bring. That IS St. Luke’s – not just an institution that loves, but a legion of God’s ambassadors sent by the Holy Spirit into the city where God has placed us. I am amazed at the work the people of St. Luke’s do for Christ in our city. The prophet Jeremiah speaks to us: But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. (Jer. 29:7) In 2024, St. Luke’s will lean in even more to Loving our City, and we will launch this outreach with the “Love our City Challenge.” Come find out more in worship with the “Love our City” sermon series
